Texas primary moved to April 3; petition deadline moved to June 17

A three-judge federal panel has blocked congressional and state legislative redistricting maps drawn by the Texas State Legislature, and the U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the maps drawn by the judges, throwing Texas election dates and maps into a state of confusion.

Because of the delay, the Texas Republican and Democratic parties, who administer the state-funded primaries submitted today for the court’s approval a plan to move the previously scheduled Mar. 6 primary to Apr. 3., with a June 5 run-off election for primary races in which no candidate gets a majority of the vote.

The plan avoids a split primary scenario in which a Mar. 6 primary would be held for all races other than congressional and state legislative races, which would be held later in the year.

“This means the petition deadline for new or previously unqualified parties will be June 17, not May 20,” Richard Winger’s Ballot Access News reports.

“One remaining problem is for candidates who want to file their paperwork to run for the Texas House, Texas Senate or U.S. Congress. The deadline to file is Monday, but right now candidates can’t know for sure what districts they live in and for who their voters may be,” The Houston Chronicle reports Friday.
